  8. I am so F***in pissed off at Jeff Burton... this is why the chase system is flawed. I'm finally going to detail out my playoff format for Nascar. I'm sick of the randomness. More to come...

  9. The current format of the Chase is flawed due to the randomness of which things occur and the drastic distancing in points.

In short, the fact that races are comprised of 43 cars quickly distances too many of the Chase drivers. Here is what I propose.

    12 Drivers make the Chase.
10 Races are set aside at the end of the season.
So far, the same format as now. Here is what changes.
Two races are run every week.

o The first race is comprised of 31 drivers (the Chase drivers are not in this race).
o These 31 drivers, over the next 10 weeks, are driving for the Sprint Much like March Madness in NCAA basketball. Those who aren’t invited to March Madness, are invited to the NIT tournament. A step down, but still in a tournament for a prestigious trophy. Essentially finisher #13 gets a $2 Million Owner bonus and the driver gets a $1 Million bonus and automatic front row entry into the Daytona 500 for the next year.
o Races are half the distance that they currently are. Like the Gatorade Duels, the 31 drivers are racing for a trophy, money and the 13th and 14th position spots in the Chase race. This gives insentive to not only win the first race but to win the second race, as well as give potential Chase teammates help in the 2nd race. I.E. Kyle Busch made the chase, Joey Logano didn’t but won the first race. Now he can help Kyle in the second.

o The second race is comprised of 12 Chase drivers and the first and second place winners from the previous race. The race is half the distance of the normal race. This keeps the points race tight and will give for much closer racing, as well as in the event of an accident, like this Sunday, the worst anyone can finish is 14th. But, as we know, some drivers step it up and do much better and others do not, so there will be some separation, but still, the most consistent driver will win. The flip side to this, is the chance for an upset, which is what makes all other sports fantastic. Yes, the Yankees get into the playoffs often, much like Jimmie Johnson, but like this year, Texas beat them. That opportunity presents itself and there will be greater chances for drivers who legitimately made the Chase, to have a serious shot to win it all.

In the end, it’s the drivers who did not make the Chase that end up being detrimental to the Chase format. Had the accident between Burton and Gordon occurred under this format, they would have finished 13th and 14th. And while their finishing places last week effectively eliminated all hope and the Chase under the format I propose, would still keep them in the hunt and all 14 positions in the race will effectively have the same intensity and importance as spots 1-3 are right now between Denny, Jimmie and Kevin.
